Nature conservancy and nature-friendly tourism in the surroundings of the spits Kurische and Frische Nehrung

The Frische and the Kurische Nehrung are small, post-ice-age spits before Poland's coast, the Russian exclave Kaliningrad (the former Königsberg) and Lithunia with an important function as step stone for up to 100 million birds of the North-East-Atlantic bird migration route.

They consist of unending sandy beaches, dune pine forests, marsh lands, bogs and sand dunes up to 70 m high and unique in Europe: a “sand travelling land”. The adjoining lagoon regions, an amphibious landscape between country and sea, are of big importance as fish spawn areas, food areas for waterfowls and even elks in the moist coast forests. Simultaneously, the region plays a central role and offers a big potential in tourism. Traditional fishing and farming serve as subsistence economy only.

Promoted by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU, the project "Nature Conservancy and Eco-Tourism around the Frische and Kurische Nehrung" was managed by the WWF-Deutschland (World Wide Fund for Nature) together with BTE and partners.

The support of a nature-friendly tourism in the region opens up new income sources for the local population and improves simultaneously the acceptance for nature conservancy areas and their special demands. Through the implementation and support of nature - and tourism information centres for visitors and the advice of local participants, through training seminars in eco-tourism and by means of small fund programs, an economic regional development is promoted in accordance with the goal of nature conservation.

The international comprehensive network and loyal co-operation of big nature protection areas and protagonists in tourism allows a cross-bordering marketing with attractive tourism offers, professional public relations in form of brochures, press campaigns or presentations on tourism fairs like at the ITB in Berlin, all aimed at creating a unique characteristic of the Nehrung and lagoons and to protect these exceptional landscapes sustainably by means of the co-operation of eco-tourism model projects.
