The devices' particular radiation detectors measure the gamma spectrum. Unfortunately they are extremely temperature-sensitive and react to environment influences with signal fluctuations. Essential disadvantages emerge from dealing with radioactive substances: costly authorization procedures and trainings as well as a special waste management.
A new generation of portable gamma spectrometers is the identiFINDER - a measuring instrument that detects radioactivity in an ecological way. The target system electronic GmbH developed an instrument that differs in a quite crucial characteristic from conventional appliances: it uses light, more exactly: a light diode (LED - Light Emitting Diode) for calibration and stabilizing, showing an excellent stability of the detector results where ever it is used. Manufacturing is more simply, problems with waste management and authorization procedures don't exist any longer, logistics and operation are simpli- fied as well.
With the identiFINDER, accidental fluctuations of the detector signal can be easily suppressed. Further crucial advantages are a higher sensitivity towards very weak radiation sources and a reliable identification of strong sources.The instrument is especially suitable for mobile measurements in the environmental sector. Expensive laboratory analyses will be avoidable in future.
