UV-reactors eliminate pharmaceutical residues

As a component of the sewage, world-wide several thousand tons of x-ray contrast mediums and antibiotics reach the soil and finally the drinking water.

There, they are a risk for both the environment and the health of man. On the part of the purification plants, no possibility to remove these materials effectively exists at present. The a.c.k. aqua concept GmbH from Karlsruhe develops an innovative procedure based on the UV-oxydation, with which the UV-light deteriorates antibiotic and x-ray contrast mediums in the sewage already before it is discharged into the sewer.

Two different aggregates are planned: A first type is intended for the use in the pharmaceutical industry. Hereby, more than 50 % of x-ray contrast mediums and antibiotics should be reduced. Based on it, a simplified and more favourable appliance is developed for the use in hospitals and even in doctor‘s surgeries.

Task of the two appliance types is to mineralize antibiotics and x-ray contrast mediums virtually completely or to change them respectively into harmless compounds, biodegradable in purification plants or in natural waters. Thus the new technology contributes to avoiding the appearance of undesirable materials directly at the source and to achieve also a perceptible relief of the diffuse pollution paths through the users.
