Modular membraneadsorber-based system for protein purification

The Institute for Technical Chemistry of the University of Hanover, the Faculty for Bio-Process Engineering of the Technical University Kaiserslautern, the Sartorius AG and the Cell Culture Service GmbH jointly developed a modular system based on membrane adsorbers for the protein purification.

The system facilitates a fast and parallel determination of the optimal purification parameters of the target protein. Compared with conventional chromatographic solutions, the use of chemicals and the accruing sewage quantity could be clearly reduced. Within the project, an innovative and non-polluting platform was developed on basis of the 8-strips for the high-throughput-screening.

With help of the system, the optimal processing conditions for proteins from complex biological samples could be determined. Main focus until now was the purification of humanely growth hormone (hGH). This protein finds pharmaceutical application in therapying small stature disease and aids-related muscular atrophy.
