Moritzburg Castle was built in the year 1547 as a hunting palace and summer retreat by Moritz, Duke of Saxony. Later, from 1723 - 33, August the Strong arranged the strucural alterations to a baroque palace. The pheasant preserve was created in 1728, in 1770 completed with the so-called «Fasanenschlösschen ». Moritzburg Castle attracts and fascinates annually approximately one million visitors. However, an inappropriate – and overuse, disturbances of the water supply and aggressive air pollutants led to the continuous decay of the valuable area. The Administration of Moritzburg Castle and the Palaces, Castles & Gardens of Saxony increasingly engage themselves in jointly protecting the entire Moritzburg area.
At the example of the pheasant preserve, a detailed to-do-catalogue on the exemplary revitalisation of the landscape and reconstruction of the historic area was produced. After the successful restoration measures, the splendid Fasanenschlösschen with the pheasant preserve soon will be beautiful again. Also the once famous pheasant breeding which was stopped at the beginning of the 20th century will be revived again. 80 pheasants will then populate the traditionsteeped area; another important step to revive the historic culture landscape Moritzburg Castle with its pittoresque barocque castles and the nature and culture beauties well worth seeing.
