Improper use, lacking interest and inadequate care, however, have partially destroyed or strongly affected them and making extensive restoration measures unavoidable. On initiative of the Ministry for Economy and Work and the Ministry of Education and Arts, the Landesheimatbund Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. started a model project combining restoration measures and a sustainable protection of the areas.
In cooperation with the landscape architecture office of HORTEC, 40 nationally valuable parks and gardens were joined together under the umbrella of a network. Monument-compatible restoration strategies could be developed, simultaneously considering nature conservation interests. Regular workshops, school competitions and many events ensured an optimal exchange of information. The «Garden Dreams on tour», an information tour through all 40 park municipalities, met an intensive resonance and essentially contributed to the concept's acceptance.
The to-do-list served as practical «screenplay» for three important parks: the Cloister Gardens Drübeck, the Embankments of the City of Gardelegen and the Europe Rose Garden of Sangerhausen. All results and experiences of the network are recorded in a central data base. Also in future, Garden Dreams e.V. will coordinate restoration measures in Saxony-Anhalt's historic gardens. The successful redevelopments of the parks are exemplarily for the protection of further objects in Saxony-Anhalt and beyond its borders.
