The whole area is characterised through its high touristic importance; both lake and garden have been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.

The increasing erosion of the western and northern lakeside as a consequence of the weather and geological conditions, of soil type and people constantly walking on, turned out to be a problem. In a model project, exemplary biological and water-engineering procedures found application to restore the historic shoreline and to avoid future damages. In order to protect the shore from critical losses, a berm made from three stone cylinders was positioned along the water side. The berm and the embankment were planted with regionally-typical aquatic plants. Protection mats – a technology from modern golf course construction – were installed in order to avoid any further erosion.

Within the whole restoration procedure, an attractive construction measures could be completely avoided. The planted riparian zone offers living space for microorganisms, aquatic creatures and birds. The redevelopment measures combine ecological, scenically- protective as well as preservational aspects.
