Riparian redevelopment in the Liebermann Garden

In 1909, the artist Max Liebermann acquired a property close to the Berlin Wannsee, on which he built a house and created an elaborate garden.

Today, this ensemble is regarded as valuable European culture monument. Many important paintings of Max Liebermann originated in this garden paradise.

However, during the last decades an inappropriate use and environmental damages strongly affected the entire complex. The riparian area, above all the embankment, showed damages caused by a lack of maintenance and as a result of heavy swell. Following preservation aspects, the bank reinforcement has been renewed as well as the whole riparian area has been naturally reshaped. Above a subterranean wall from light pile planks an embankment out of limestone has been built, partially accompanied by a sand wall aimed at cultivating a reed bed in front of it. This measure led to a soothing of the waves and created niches in the soil.

The redevelopment exemplarily shows that measures of preservation and of nature conservation do not conflict each other. The project serves as model for comparable measures planned at similar properties.
