InnovationsCentrum Biokatalyse – a network for biocatalysis

Biocatalytic procedures play an outstanding role for the industrial (white) biotechnology. Nature offers a virtually inexhaustible number of biocatalysts which are destined to optimize existing production procedures or to develop fully new, non-polluting processes and products.

Up to now, only less than 100 biocatalysts are used commercially.
Between 2002 and 2007 the DBU has supported 32 projects within the initiative »InnovationsCentrum Biokatalyse ICBio«. The financial backing totals approximately € 10 million, whereas the projects cover an entire financial volume of approximately € 22 million. Goal was to help biotechnological innovation with its ecological and economical benefits.

House of biocatalysis
ICBio – also known as »House of biocatalysis« – is carried by an intensive cooperation of academia and industry and is based on three topical pillars, namely (i) intelligent screening systems, (ii) efficient expression and (iii) downstream-processing.
