On the basis of the regrowing material sugar, made-to-measure microorganisms produce the pharmaceutical-clinical agent L-serine in the industrial standard: Efficiently and ecologically on the terms of the good manufacturing practice (GMP) – thus combining sustainability of production and internationally binding quality standards.
The bacterium C. glutamicum produces L-serine only in minor quantities and therefore is inappropriate for the industrial production. However, through directed adaptation of metabolism reactions, so-called »metabolic design«, scientists of the Institute for Biotechnology 1 of the Forschungszentrum Jülich succeeded in changing the natural control mechanisms of the L-serine synthesis in C. glutamicum and thereby achieved an increase of the synthesis performance.
Ecological biotechnological production
The company Amino GmbH improved the bio-chemical engineering parameters of the large-scale production as also the product processing. Production and processing of the L-serine work with ion exchange and crystallization. These operations save energy and substances and contribute decisively to an environmental compatibility of the entire procedure.
