Following the example of trees and bones, the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe developed computer methods that transfer load-controlled growth and shrinking in design and manufacturing on technical components in order to increase their lifespan or to save material, respectively.

A good mechanical construction is comparably with a chain from equally solid links. No part is overloaded, no one underloaded. There are two types of constructional defects. If the chain has a weak link with the risk of a fracture, it can be stabilised and »regrows« as solid as the other links again. So do the trees!
