The »underground« zoo

The growing economic use of land and forestry areas increasingly pressurizes the soil as natural habitat.

Soil compaction and chemical hazardous substances, like fertilizers, have serious impacts on the animals living in the ground. For this reason, the Osnabrueck »Museum Schölerberg - Nature and Environment - Planetarium« has developped the permanent exhibition »unter.Welten - the universe under our feet«. Additionally, the local Zoo plans a subterranean zoo in form of an experience-oriented cave system.

The presentation concept
An alive wildlife welcomes the visitor with unique insights into the soil. With their subterranean residential constructions both native and exotic mammals as also insects are in the centre of the presentation concept. Transparent channel systems meander above the visitors‘ heads as also under their feet and allow spectacular insights into the living conditions of the soil inhabitants. The visitors move continuously in a subterranean experience and finally arrive in the exhibition »unter-Welten« of the museum for natural history. The museum management hopes to bring more than 700,000 people closer to the topic »soil as natural habitat«.
