Apartment buildings in the low energy standard, ecological construction materials and lightweight constructions, outside walls and roofs covered with greenery, alternative energies like the district heating from a wood pellet-driven heat and power station also as solar technologies are part of the extensive concept. Heat, water, electricity or nutrition are topics of a sustainable education that works with different methods: Control units show how much solar electricity is generated or rainwater used, competitions motivate to a thrifty contact with resources and brochures inform about technical and ecological backgrounds.

Learning sustainability around the clock
In the classes, but above all in the boarding school life, sustainability is an important topic. Therefore, students are enabled to develop also a school-internal eco-balance that is published in form of an environmental report. Tasks like the school‘s own service offers in the field of environment, technology or with bicycles increase the students awareness for responsibilities, that make sense and are fun. The project »Sustainable Salem« has shown once more that environmental education creates the awareness towards sustainability less through the raised index finger but above all through personal achievements.
