Ecologically remodelled flood control basins

Flood control basins are important instruments of flood protection. However they impair the ecology of streams and rivers quite considerably.

At the example of the flood control basin Grimmelshausen of the river Werra it is demonstrated exemplarily that a remodelling is possible in line with nature conservation and ecology. The common project of the BUND Landesverband Thüringen e.V. Erfurt and the Hydrolabor Schleusingen aims at improving the passability in the basin and at shaping the outlet structure accordingly.

Rebuilding of passability
The flood protection function of the basin should remain completely. The project is an essential step towards achieving the »good ecological condition« as stipulated in the EC Water Framework Directive. The suggested solutions aim at decreasing the negative effects of the flood control basin on the water quality, the fish species and its effect as a sediment trap. Since no existing flood control basin has been rebuilt ecologically in Germany up to now, the results are of nationwide importance.
