Mineral wool is widely used in today’s construction industry. In Germany, the disman-tling and refurbishment of buildings lead to 10 million cubic meters of mineral waste a year, which is to be deposited as hazardous waste. The re-use of old mineral wool insulation is permitted only in the course of demolition, renovation and maintenance work. New insulation material from mineral wool fibre had to be both geometrically and chemically adopted to avoid a categorization as carcinogen. So far, however, there is still no safe method for the recycling of the old mineral wool.
Based on an asbestos recycling technique of the company Reimann Umweltschutz GmbH, the Institut für Fertigteiltechnik und Fertigbau (IFF) Weimar e.V. and the Bau-haus University developed a procedure for an environmentally sound treatment and recycling of carcinogenic mineral wool. Before recycling the mineral wool, the fiber structure has to be destroyed effectively. For this purpose the hazardous material is first slagged through microwaves and subsequently introduced into an eccentric swing mill. Due to its chemical composition, the new fibre-free product can be used in various ways in the building materials industry. For the future, the project partners plan to implement the procedure on a large scale industrial basis.
