Continuous micro-reaction processes offer novel ways of process intensification. One successful example for the use of such technology might be the synthesis of rod/coil-copolymers (organic semiconductors).
The demand for rod/coil-copolymers as active layer in polymer solar cells or OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is constantly increasing. In comparison to homopolymers, the highly organized supramolecular structures of copolymers offer the possibility of controlling optoelectronic properties by targeted variation and enable a significantly increased efficiency of the photovoltaic conversion.
The optimized synthesis of such semi-conductive compounds as it has been developed by the project partners is a promising basis for the production of inexpensive solar cells. Conventionally the copolymers have been synthesized and processed by living anionic polymerisation using batch technology which is both, time and material consuming. However, the new micro-reaction technology will facilitate a targeted and efficient formation of specific rod/coil-copolymer compounds. The precise process control of the multi-step synthesis, the optimized heat transfer and mixing as well as the accurate dosage of reactants will lead to a highly increased efficiency of the whole production process. An experimental plant, designed for this purpose, is supposed to demonstrate the benefits of this approach esp. for screening and product design of such compounds.
The experimental research will be accompanied by an environmental assessment, in order to guide the decision making process and to show the key issues of ecological improvements.
