Development of a measurement system for biomass combustion plants to monitor the reduction of plant efficiency due to corrosion and contamination of heat exchanger surfaces

Improved Efficiency of Biomass Power Plants

Sehen Sie selbst...

Biomass combustion plants have to operate from the ecological and economic perspective in an energy efficient way and at high capacity. However, the formation of residues on heat exchanger surfaces and corrosion reduce energy efficiency and the smooth operation of the plants considerably.

By coordinating fuel and running parameters during the operation process the formation of residues on the heat exchanger surfaces could be minimized. At present, however, appropriate online tracking systems are lacking. Chemin GmbH (Augsburg) has therefore developed a measurement system based on an on-line heat flux sensor. The company has validated and tested the use of a non-invasive prototype to be used on evaporator walls of combustion boilers. Compared to existing measurement systems, the advantage of this new model is the easy installation on the membrane walls. Up till now, the Chemin heat flux sensor has already been installed in 18 biomass plants throughout Europe.

The newly developed measurement technology can determine temperature differences directly from the resulting thermoelectric force by use of thermo wires. In order to present the data online in a user-friendly design and to enable the optimal regulation of firing and cleaning in the future, the integration of the sensor into the process control system is currently tested. Final aim of the project is a measurement system that clearly reduces the formation of residues and corrosion on heat exchangers, and increases the efficiency of the plant while reducing downtimes.
