The Sinsheim company Junker Filter GmbH developed in cooperation with the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus a bio-electric smell separator which can separate aerosols and volatile organic compounds in a single process step.
It is a combination of an electrostatic precipitator and a biological trickle-bed reactor (biofilter). The precipitator cleans the air of dust particles. At the same time it has a grid whit a porous filler in it. This provides a major growth surface for the so-called biofilm which breaks down the odors. Since the method combines two systems, it offers lower space requirements and reduced operating costs.
In addition, technical synergies make the system more efficient. The result: a 90% removal of odors and dust deposition of about 99%. The process, a nominee for the Environmental Technology Award 2009 Baden-Wuerttemberg, has now been made compatible with industrial standards with a system having a volume of 5,000 m3/h and a process flow control system made by Siemens.
