GLOKAL Change

Global assessment of Local learning

GLOKAL Change

Environmental changes have different effects on nature, enconomy and local people throughout the world. In the age of globalization it is becoming increasingly difficult to understand the causes, mechanisms and consequences of human action in a global context.

The interactive learning platform GLOKAL Change, which has been developed at the University of Education Heidelberg, is geared to young people between 10 and 16 years. Using satellite images, they can explore the
complexity of the impacts of environmental changes on sustainable development on a global and local scale.

Developed in the context of Education for Sustainable
Development (ESD), the web-based learning platform GLOKAL Change focuses on four environmental topics:

  • Ecosystem Forest and its Management,
  • Mining Resources in Open-Cast Minings,
  • Biofuels from Agriculture and
  • Land use.

Examples provide an introduction to the issues raised. Different satellite images visualize the size and shape of the space-related processes. The images are provided free of charge on a map server.

Besides the computer-based learning, GLOKAL Change supports young people in performing geoscientific fieldwork. Satellite images of Germany are available free of charge on a map server. Furthermore, GLOKAL Change provides worksheets and methodology papers on various fieldwork methods.
