Sustainable chemical processes can help to protect the environment and chemistry as an attractive career field offers the opportunity to contribute to sustainable development. Sustainable chemistry is so far only rarely discussed in formal and informal education. New offers aim to remedy this, raise the interest of children and young people and their awareness for environmental protection and resource efficiency.
The Agnes Pockels-student laboratory at the Technical University of Braunschweig works with new experiments tailored to different age groups and school types. The didactics of experimential learning is in the focus.
Students explore the principles of recycling and composting. The greenhouse effect is considered scientifically. Experiments with starch or cellulose convey the theme of renewable resources. The use of catalysts makes clear how chemical reactions can occur efficiently and precisely.
