The project PLENUM, intended to preserve and develop nature and environment in Baden-Wuerttemberg, pursues precisely this approach. The State Office for Environmental Protection has developed a large-scale conservation concept. 19 priority zones in the order of 770,000 hectares have been selected under conservation aspects as potential funding area.

In the project areas called Allgäu-Upper Swabia, Western Lake Constance, the Swabian Alb, Kaiserstuhl and Heckengäu the PLENUM criteria serve as funding guidelines in the field of agriculture and food marketing. In total, 15 percent of the surface of Baden-Wuerttemberg with over 550,000 hectares are already part of the PLENUM programme.

Priority task in the western Lake Constance region is the sustainable development and environmental protection in the catchment area of the huge Lake Constance water reservoir. The core is a close link between agriculture, conservation, trade, tourism and culture. Over 300 projects have been realized so far.

The main results are new and attractive tourism offers with high proportions of environmental education, and regional products and brands such as «Gutes vom See« or the »Linzgau-Korn«. Substantiated criteria for cooperation and production ensure a high quality of the products, in addition the regional flow patterns are enhanced, the natural and cultural landscape is preserved and an additional source of income for the farmers created.
