CO2 reduction for compact cars

In order to reduce the CO2 emissions produced by individual traffic, today’s combustion engines are in need of improvement.

Motoren auf dem Prüfstand

The innovation products of the company META Motoren- und Energietechnik GmbH do their part by improving the efficiency through engine downsizing combined with turbocharging (downsizing), cylinder deactivation and new combustion processes - but also through the use of alternative fuels.

The downsizing of engines has a significant savings potential. Reduced cubic inches, induction and reduction in speed can optimize the engine operation. In the compact and subcompact car class, a reduction of the number of cylinders can improve the edge conditions for an effective downsizing from a thermodynamic point of view. However, small numbers of cylinders combined with high super-charging lead to a large degree of rotation uniformity on
the crankshaft and thus a loss in comfort.

The meta-downsizing concept provides for the 2-cylinder-engine the following benefits:

  • Downsizing at the same time reducing the number of cylinders (efficiency)
  • Charging by means of the spontaneously performing engine
  • Compensation of alternating torques on the crankshaft
  • Fuel: CNG

This engine concept allows emissions of only 69 g/km in the compact car segment.
