Trade union as pioneer: »Solidarity shopping« and »Waste-avoiding office«

The Union for Construction, Agriculture and Environment (IG BAU) and the Peco Institute e.V. strive jointly for Sustainable Development, which means that all actions are aligned to enable people to live in dignity, to provide good working conditions and protect the environment.

Six million union members in Germany have a significant market power. The union IG BAU wants to protect the environment and therefore spreads the example of a global shopping under sustainable conditions. First steps are already implemented (green electricity and fair traded coffee in the members’ offices, photovoltaic on holiday homes ...). Attention is paid to the manufacture, to distribution paths and social criteria.

»Solidarity shopping« means the implementation of social and environmental standards in the union’s purchasing policy, and an example for other organizations. At the same time the interest in fair consumption among employees, members and their families will be encouraged. The union will have a stake in the market and thus affect a sustainable economic development.

The project also covers measures for waste reduction, energy saving, the responsible use of office supplies and the well-being at work. The first »model office« was opened in Bielefeld in January 2012. - The Peco Institute provides advice, supports and trains the partner institutions.
