Flying Science Circus explains importance of strategic metals

The hunger for raw materials is growing in national economies, at the same time important metals are threaten to become scarce.

Schülerversuch

»Wild recycling« in developing countries endangers the health of millions, has detrimental effects on nature and environment and wastes valuable natural (secondary) raw materials. Therefore, Germany and the EU develop policies to ensure the supply of raw materials. The Clausthal University of Technology will approach students with this subject. The DBU supported an environmental education pilot project, implemented in 2011 at two secondary schools (Gymnasium in der Wüste, Ratsgymnasium) in Osnabrück for the first time.

Schülerdiskussion

In a new workshop the Flying Science Circus of the TU Clausthal brings the topics »Material efficiency« and »Recycling« into the upper stages of secondary schools. Central theme is the importance of »strategic metals« for products in information and communication technology, environmental technologies, as well as for alloying components of metallic materials for special applications. Shown is the entire issue of »controversial high-tech resources« using the example of a mobile phone.

Thematik am Produkt eines Handys

The workshop promotes an in-depth visit to the new student laboratory »Materials science« at the Clausthal University of Technology. There, the subject material efficiency is demonstrated using the example of the development of carbide materials that lead to improved drilling technology in the field of geothermal energy.
