The Erding Berufs- und Fachoberschule was built as a passive house and has a calculated specific heating demand of only about 10 kWh/(m2a). The total energy consumption lies 70 percent below the reference value of the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV). This low level of energy consumption of the refurbished building is so far unprecedented in Germany - an achievement simply reached by the careful composition of the technical and structural components.
Take for example the entrance and event hall: set in a glass atrium which connects the northern and the southern part of the building it also serves as an »exhaust shaft« for the ventilation system. By this, the raw material for extra vent lines is saved. In addition, the glass roof of the atrium supplies the building with natural light and solar heat and thus reduces the energy needed for lighting and heating. In order to avoid heat accumulation in the summer the roof can be shaded.
For an environmentally friendly heat supply the building is connected to the geothermal district heating pipe of the city of Erding. A highly efficient insulation, an outstanding air-tight quality and a heat recovery from the ventilation system avoid heat loss.
An environmentally-friendly closed-circuit ground water system replaces the conventional air conditioning systems and provides for an efficient cooling. Additional elements of this exemplary concept, which has been awarded with the E.ON Bayern Environmental Award 2009, are a sensor driven, demand actuated lighting control and a robust, easy-to-use control technology.
