Angelaschule Osnabrück

Ecological redesign of school building and park

Schülerinnen

Energy-efficient renovation of the school building, ecological redesign of the park and the integration of these activities into the lessons - large shoes to fill for the Angelaschule, a Gymnasium under the auspices of the school foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück. Though, the project is a success: since 2006, the school is restored by and by, involving partners from the church and local authorities, the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics as also various parent, student and teacher initiatives. The gym, the auditorium and a classroom wing appear in renewed splendor.

Energy consumption significantly reduced

The class wing got an inside insulation from ecological materials. A new ventilation system in the ceiling of the classrooms regulates both temperature and air intake. An elaborate light control and a sunscreen provide an ideal learning environment. The measures reduced the energy consumption of the building significantly, leading to less carbon-dioxide emissions by over 70%.

A barefoot path, a ropes course, a traditional orchard and a »Green Classroom« make the five-acre park both a learning and a living environment. Even in the
curricula of the various school subjects, the themes of ecology and sustainability are firmly anchored. Because of its strong commitment, the Angelaschule has received several awards, such as becoming »Environmental School in Europe« and »Agenda 21-School«, as well as getting the »Eco-Schools Award«.
