The Danube – a connecting river

The Danube connects Europe from west to east.

Donau

The European Commission recognizes the Danube as a unifying element and has developed in 2011 »the so-called Strategy for the Danube Region« with the aim of an increased economic development of this region. In addition to this strategy, the project of the Alfred Toepfer Academy for Nature Conservation (NNA) wants to pass on expertise in order to protect and develop also the ecological network of the unique wetlands along the Danube.

This is achieved through the innovative combination of practical implementation of projects along the Danube and a network of specialists for conservation and regional development. The professionals involved in cross-border projects, set goals for the European Union’s environmental goals and contribute to the solution of conflicts of interest at regional and national level.

Bootstour

Think European – act locally

The trainees implement individually or as member of an international team local conservation projects. According to heir training and their professional background, the projects in their home countries deal with issues such as open land management and grazing, education for sustainable development, conservation measures, renaturation of rivers, provision of environmental information, area management plans, Natura 2000 and international conferences. Due to the great success the program has been expanded to other countries of the Middle and Lower Danube.
