Sustainable agriculture

In sustainable agriculture it is all about increasing the efficient use of resources, protecting the environment, establishing economic viability and ensuring public acceptance and compatibility.

In order to meet these demands, agricultural producers need practical management systems (documentation and indicator systems), with which the production process can be analyzed and improved with regard to its sustainability. The German Agriculture Association (DLG) e. V., with its academic partners, has developed the DLG Sustainability Standards for Agricultural Practice.

The indicators

Our goal is to quantitatively evaluate the ecological, economic and social sustainability of the production, and thus to arrive at conclusions that support the decision-making process. Only what is measurable can be managed: the indicators are the measurement units, their real and ideal values are compared.

The ecological, economic and social aspects, and their strengths and weaknesses, become clearly visible. The agricultural producer can optimize his cultivation process for the improvement of his production, to the benefit of the environment and society. The indicators are scientifically grounded and have been discussed with the socially relevant groups.

The Sustainability Standards for Farming Production were developed by the DLG e. V. in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich, the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, and the Institute for Sustainable Agriculture of Halle/Saale e. V.
