The Movable Hydroelectric Power Station

It was the first of its kind in the world: the mini-hydroelectric power station on the Ilm River in Bad Sulza contains a movable powerhouse positioned under the water’s surface.

With its swivel design it acts simultaneously as a control gate, eliminating the need for additional structures for flood discharge and river wash dissemination. The advantages of this concept, implemented by Hydro-Energie Roth GmbH of Karlsruhe: the system uses the hydropotential more efficiently than standard systems and can be constructed faster and more affordably. At the same time the operating costs are reduced substantially through the effective dissemination of debris and river wash, and through direct drive from the permanent magnet-powered generator.

Energy yield through ejector effect

For the small hydropower system a special hydraulic design was developed to achieve a high additional energy yield from the flow of the suction pipe. Through this »ejector effect« the power station output at high watermark reaches a level up to 23 % higher than without flow dynamic or with a standard hydropower system.

The excellent results of the experimental system on the Ilm River provided the foundation for two large demonstration systems on the Kinzig River in Gengenbach (530 kW) and Offenburg (450 kW), from which output increases of up to 45 % at high watermark are aimed for.

For the movable hydroelectric power station the firm Hydro-Energie Roth was awarded the NEO 2010, the Prize for Innovation of the Karlsruhe Technology Region and the Environmental Engineering Prize for 2011 of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The demonstration project on the Kinzig River was also recognized as »Best of the Best« LIFE Project (LIFE06/D/000485) by the member states of the EU.
