Ecological management system enhances sustainability

Caritas and Diakonia

Alt und Jung

850,000 employees and 35,000 facilities: Caritas and Diakonia are among the largest employers in Germany. A more sustainable oriented purchasing results in an enormous potential for environmental improvement.

Within an ecumenical model project, a number of facilities of Caritas and Diakonia want to optimize procurement and services in line with environmental and social standards. In addition to energy and food, the purchase of textiles and sanitary‑ and care products is in focus. The project is initiated by the Institute for Church and Society of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia (IKG).

Concentrated market power preserves the environment

The purchasing volume of churches amounts to estimated 60 billion euros annually, of which alone Caritas and Diakonia account for about 80 percent.
