Focus: Ocean

Students communicate on the future of our oceans and coasts

Kinder erforschen

The oceans and coasts are ecosystems crucial to life. Not only do they provide sustenance, energy and raw materials, they are also utilized as an economic sphere, as transport routes and as living- and vacation spaces. EUCC-D – the Coasts Union of Germany (die Küsten Union Deutschland e. V.) has supported work for the sustainable development of oceans and coasts for ten years. In the current education project »Ocean in Focus« (»Meer im Fokus«) students from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are developing their own communications concepts for discussing the subject with the public.

Schüler lernen

Young people communicate

Young people in the eighth grade and older take a look into the future developments surrounding oceans and coasts. They interview experts on, among other topics, sustainable fishing; discuss energy and climate change with specialists; and conduct surveys among the population. Through research and discovery they accumulate knowledge in order to pass it along to residents in the region. They present their work in museums, hospitals, libraries, aquariums and city halls, and organize a contest. In the process they present their worldview  and demonstrate their commitment, as future decision makers who are interested in a sustainable future. A communication process between school and society begins to take shape.
