Heat Loss Utilization in the Steel Industry

As a steelworks the Georgsmarienhütte GmbH is a part of one of the most energy-intensive sectors of the industry.

Elektrolichtbogenofen

Thus it is important to consider all possibilities for improved energy-efficiency and to investigate their practical applicability. For this reason the Georgsmarienhütte GmbH initiated a project on the structured analysis of heat loss utilization potential. The goal was to identify and evaluate heat sources and heat sinks, and also consider possible utilization thereof. In order to judge the existing potential from technical and economic standpoints, a simulation-supported study was conducted.

Evaluating heat sources

The analysis showed that on the site of the Georgsmarienhütte GmbH there are more heat sources than heat sinks. The available heat loss potential should be applied, with an appropriate conversion technology, to electricity production in a decentralized manner. To that end it is important that this system be interconnected intelligently in order to reduce energy loss.

The process made it evident that a simulation-supported study can be successfully employed to portray the current heat situation, demonstrate potential solutions and assist in the development of measures to realize the goal. A purely static analysis would have been insufficient for illustrating these complex relationships, and identifying and evaluating available means of optimization. Since the project was conceived with a view to universality of application, it should show a corresponding adaptability to other firms in the industry.
