The Schiller Park neighborhood in the Wedding district of Berlin, which stands under historical protection, is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Inheritance. In the so-called buffer zone of the world inheritance region are buildings from the 1950s by Hans Hoffmann.
Within the framework of the DBU project »Monuments and Energy – Postwar Modernism«, a renovation concept was developed embracing both energy-efficiency and historical preservation for the Hoffmann houses too. The project’s technical and scientific supervision was the purview of the Institute for Structural Design of the Technical University of Dresden. The coordinating agency for the interdisciplinary planning team was the Winfried Brenne Architectural office, Berlin.
Since the Hoffmann buildings had no severe damage, the renovation measures aimed for increased energy efficiency and improved thermal insulation in the building envelope, plus adaptation of the house engineering to modern standards within the considerations involved in historical preservation. The following planning priorities were set and executed:
As a result, the primary energy consumption was reduced by more than 80 % to only ca. 55 kWh/a m2. The buildings reached the standard energy requirement values of a comparable new house.
