Lohr School- and Sports Center to achieve CO2-neutral status

School- an Sports-Center Lohr

Some 0.5 % of the energy used in the entire Main-Spessart Municipal Region goes to the School- and Sports Center in the town of Lohr am Main, which began operations in 1978 and consists of a college preparatory high school, a middle school, a three-part sports complex, and an indoor swimming pool. Now, through a planned integrated renovation process, the complex’s energy consumption and energy costs are to be substantially reduced. The goals are to create a CO2-neutral energy supply and to approach the »passive house standard«.

For the implementation, three packages of measures will be at the forefront:

  • With a highly heat-insulated building envelope which is largely thermally bridge-free, the end-consumption of energy will be reduced by approximately half.
  • Multiple decentralized ventilation systems with heat recovery will also reduce the heat use, as will heat recovery from the swimming pool waste water.
  • The required heating can largely be produced by a thermal heat pump system, which will use primarily, as its own energy, photovoltaic electricity. An ice-storage unit with around 1,250 m3 volume will function as a buffer, and will be used in the winter as a further source of heat and in the summer as a cold-storage system.

Energy Savings and Transferability

Through the exploitation of environmental heat and the absence of combustion processes, the emission of some 2,300 tons of CO2 should be avoided annually. At the same time, optimal teaching and learning conditions, as well as sports opportunities, will be created.
