First eight-story wooden building in Germany

Wood construction offers many environmental advantages

eight-story wooden building

Wood construction offers many environmental advantages: wood is a renewable raw material, which binds the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) during the growth phase. The bound CO2 is eventually stored in the structure, and is thus prevented from entering the atmosphere. The production and assembly of wooden construction elements also requires less energy than is expended when using their mineral equivalents. In comparison with houses of typical construction, the global warming potential during basic construction can be reduced by up to 75% through the use of wood. In order to enable the use of wood construction in multiple-family dwellings and office construction, a new system solution for wood structures of up to eight stories has been developed. The first eight-story wooden building in Germany can be seen in Bad Aibling.

high level of prefabrication

Heat-, fire-, and noise protection effectively resolved

Essential elements of the system are the massive wooden walls and -ceilings of the supporting structure. Simple assembly with a high level of prefabrication, as well as high heat- and sound insulation requirements, are guaranteed under economic conditions. The concepts for preventive and structural fire protection satisfy the requirements for building classifications up to 5, and still leave visible the wooden outer surfaces of the facades and the building’s interior. The solid-construction walls distribute the ceiling’s weight along the entire wall length and have a bracing function as well. On the exterior, the massive wooden walls are covered with insulation panels such that the building comes close to reaching passive house standards. Furthermore, the layered wall construction is conducive to separability of building materials in case repairs or eventual removal are necessary.
