Since the EU-wide ban on organotin compounds in »antifouling« coatings for sporting and recreational boats, numerous biocide-free coatings and systems for yachts have been developed. Still, for use in marine waters and in cases of extreme organic fouling, a great deal of uncertainty continues to exist.

Long-lasting, durable non-stick coatings offer a highly promising means of achieving a non-toxic standard of quality in antifouling protection – because on surfaces of this quality, the adhesive strength of organic growth is minimal. The activity profile of recreational boats with long idle periods in the harbor and low speeds (under 10 knots), however, places high demands on the functionality of such coatings.

Testreihe Seepocken

The MAReCOAT company of Oberndorf, Germany, has successfully developed an inert, nontoxic material which works as a growth-preventing anti-adherent coating for recreational boats. The coating was designed such that it can be cleaned simply with nothing more than a sponge. The new coating system can be used with all standard boat building materials. A conscious decision was made to refrain from using erosive or leachate elements. This means that the coating will remain highly efficient for years. In addition, an innovative injection molding system enables a solvent-free process.

The non-stick coating is now available on the market for all standard types of recreational boats. With proper care, the coating can reach a lifespan of at least five years.
