2050 – Your Climate Market

Do you know the effects of your shopping behavior on the environment?

The »Climate Market« of the Bremen climate protection agency »energiekonsens« is designed to answer this question. Great amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are produced by our daily consumption. They include direct emissions, which result from, for example, heating - but primarily from indirect emissions, which are created through the production of our consumer goods.

In the Climate Market, customers may learn playfully  how they can reduce their personal CO2 output and live in a more climate-friendly manner. The Climate Market moves from neighborhood to neighborhood and makes use of empty commercial properties to present its offerings for periods of up to twelve weeks. Each product bears a price tag which designates the CO2 value of its production or its transport. As in a real supermarket, total costs are calculated at the cash register. The cash register receipt, however, gives the total amount not in Euros but in CO2 emissions. During the shopping process, signs and so-called »shopping stamps« in the store offer useful tips on climate protection. For additional suggestions there is a brochure, which includes a shopping guide for sustainable consumption in the shoppers’ neighborhood. A comprehensive subject- and target-group-specific framework program for environmental communication is also on offer.

The Climate Market pays visits in Bremen, Bremerhaven, Bad Zwischenahn and Hamburg. Those who are not located near a real Climate Market can find helpful shopping tips in the Climate Market Online Shop at www.klimamarkt2050.de.
