Simulating the climate – understanding the change

Online learning modules, with which students and teachers can reconstruct the in models simulated development of the climate

Folgen des Klimawandels für Deutschland

Making the complex interrelationships of climate change understandable is a difficult assignment for many teachers – now there is a remedy: via the publicly accessible online portal www.KlimafolgenOnline.com the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (»Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung«, PIK) is developing online learning modules, with which students and teachers can reconstruct the in models simulated development of the climate. This instrument is being developed in cooperation with the Berlin-Brandenburg State Institute for Schools and Media (»Landesintitut für Schule und Medien Berlin-Brandenburg«, LISUM) and linked to the Berlin-Brandenburg Educational Server (»Bildungsserver Berlin-Brandenburg«).

Whether in the schools or in educational programs outside the school – the connection to the dimension of personal experience makes the project especially relevant for students: they can work with locally-generated data, and thus reconstruct the impact of climate change upon their immediate living environment.

Fortbildungsangebote für Lehrer

The subject of renewable energy sources has a special significance here: in simulations, students can see what impact climate change has on issues involving the potential for wind-, water- and photovoltaic energy production, and how it affects local areas of the economy such as agriculture and tourism. By means of interdisciplinary learning modules, which include background information and recommendations, the ecological and economic effects of climate change are made transparent.

The online learning modules developed for the online portal make the expertise of the PIK available in classroom environments for the first time. Teachers are trained and qualified in advanced training sessions for the implementation of this offering.
