Energy-saving renovation measures for the existing building stock, which in Germany is responsible for some 20 percent of CO2 emissions and approximately 35 – 40 percent of final energy consumption, represent an important contribution to climate protection. Around 5 % of structures built previous to 1978 are »listed« as protected, either partly or completely. In these buildings, too, energy savings are possible. In some cases this requires the carefully considered development of an individual, appropriate energy-saving solution, which is compatible with the required aspects in regard to architectural qualities and physical properties.
The grant program known as »Landmark Efficient House« (»Effizienzhaus Denkmal«) from Germany’s development bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) was created especially for historic buildings and other structures especially worthy of preservation. This grant support is conditional upon the demonstrable existence of a proper energy consulting arrangement, which also takes into consideration preservation concerns and is undertaken by experts in the field. The recognition and registration of the energy consultants takes place through the coordinating agency »Energy Consultants for Historic Buildings« (»Energieberater für Baudenkmale«), created jointly by the Wissenschaftlich-Technische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Bauwerkserhaltung und Denkmalpflege e. V. (WTA) and the Vereinigung der Landesdenkmalpfleger (VdL) with additional support from the DBU.
To date, more than 800 individuals have been recognized as energy consultants for historic buildings.
