Phosphorus recovery in small wastewater treatment plants

Phosphorus compounds can cause serious environmental problems in water bodies. BUSSE IS GmbH, of Leipzig, and HeGo Biotec GmbH, of Berlin, therefore develop a novel process for the post-treatment of treated wastewater from small wastewater treatment plants and small sewage works (up to 500 p.e.). Their research project aims to reduce the phosphate load of the discharge from the wastewater treatment plants, and to recover the phosphorus removed from the wastewater.

Small wastewater treatment plants based on biomembrane technology with downstream selective phosphorus elimination and phosphorus recovery - extended by the use of granular filter materials based on iron hydroxide - represent an innovative approach in this area. The phosphorus dissolved in the pretreated wastewater is adsorptively bound to an adsorber granulate based on iron hydroxide in a downstream cartridge. The bound phosphorus is then desorbed from the filter granulate using a regeneration solution. The regeneration solution and the cartridges can be recycled. In a further treatment step, a phosphate concentrate can be obtained from the solution, which is suitable for the production of an exploitable phosphate-containing secondary raw material such as magnesium-ammonium phosphate (struvite) or apatite, and can be used in the fertilizer industry.
