Global full supply of renewable energies

100 % renewable electricity is feasible - at any hour of the day and at a lower costs

The key message of the study: A global shift towards 100 % renewable electricity is feasible.

In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Convention - i.e. to limit global warming to a maximum of 2 °C or 1.5 °C - the transformation of the energy system towards renewable energy sources and greater energy efficiency must be significantly accelerated.

In a DBU-funded study, the Ludwig Boelkow Foundation, Ottobrunn, and the Energy Watch Group, Berlin, together with Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland), want to show that a global and cost-efficient full supply of renewable energies is possible in all sectors (electricity, heat, mobility). The major challenge in the transformation of the energy system is to achieve synergies between different renewable energy resources and different regions.

In November 2017, the first results on the electricity sector were published. The study offers political decision-makers as well as economic and civil society actors data on the feasibility, financing and security of supply of an electricity system based on renewable energies. The key message of the study is that a global shift towards 100 % renewable electricity is feasible. And this can be done at any hour of the day and at a lower cost than the existing system based largely on fossil fuels and nuclear energy. The energy transformation is essentially a question of political will, not technology or economic efficiency.
