Since 1996, more than 1,000 university graduates from 17 countries in Central and Eastern Europe have been sponsored, who are now working in various fields such as science, economics or politics.

  • Organisation of the alumni annual meetings and other events/workshops/specialist colloquia

  • Transnational cooperation through participation in the annual exchange during the international alumni workshop

Alumni associations exist in the following countries with direct contact persons:

Joint activities

Current CEE fellowhip holders and alumni are invited once a year to the fellowship holder and alumni meetings in the run-up to the presentation of the German Environmental Award and the DBU Summer Academy. In addition, a meeting of all alumni living in Germany takes place on this last weekend of October. Every four years, all current fellowship holders and alumni are invited to the „Woche der Umwelt“ in Berlin. In addition, an international alumni workshop is held annually (alternately in a CEE country and in Germany). It serves the exchange between the DBU alumni networks in the CEE countries, the DBU doctoral fellowship programme in Germany and the DBU office. There is also the possibility for alumni to organise a colloquium.

The current CEE fellowship holders are networked on a communication platform (https://stipnet.dbu.de).

Small Grants

At its 115th meeting on 11 March 2020, the Board of Trustees of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt approved a conceptual addition to the CEE Fellowship Programme.

So-called "Small Grants" are intended to offer fellows an additional incentive to return to their home country after the core fellowship and to use the skills they have acquired in Germany in the field of environmental protection and nature conservation. The funding is granted for a maximum of six months. The Small Grants are to be awarded primarily to those fellows who have achieved an exceptional performance in the course of the fellowship.

The Small Grants serve the in-depth qualification of excellent fellows with regard to the conception and implementation of research and development as well as development and testing projects with relevance to sustainability, the environment and/or nature conservation. In the Small Grants, the fellows potentially qualify as future project partners of the DBU. The Small Grants are generally to be carried out in the fellows' countries of origin and should be oriented towards the DBU's funding topics. In particular, they can comprise three types of projects:

a) Field of action analyses on selected environmental challenges,

b) Development of feasibility concepts for potential projects,

c) Implementation of model practical projects.

The projects should focus on topics that address specific sustainability challenges.

Further information on application requirements and content requirements can be found in the funding guidelines for Small Grants. For further questions, please contact Dr. Alexander Bittner (a.bittner@dbu.de).
