3.) More efficient biomass combustion

In biomass combustion systems, it is necessary from the environmental, but also economic point of view o achieve high energy efficiency and high availability. Energy efficiency and availability are limited, in particular through the formation of deposits on the heat exchanger surfaces and resulting corrosion. An operation matched to the type of fuel and the current operating parameters contributes to a reduction in deposit formation on the heat exchanger surfaces.

However, there is no measurement system available that delivers the necessary online data for optimized operating parameters. The company CheMin GmbH (Augsburg) and the Chair for Combustion, Heat and Mass Transfer of the TU Dresden have developed a measurement system for online determination of the heat flow. The determination of this size is for biomass-fired steam generators, which are usually constructed from membrane walls, an important quantity. It provides important information regarding the local heat transfer in the combustion chamber. Thus it is possible to evaluate the basis of the heat flux density, the fire situation on the grid, the local pollution level of the wall and its status. Thus, the new measurement system will help to reduce the down time of power plants and increase their efficiency. Meanwhile, the measurement system was installed at 18 facilities throughout Europe. The outstanding scientific quality of the work at the Dresden University of Technology was awarded the Franz-Stolze-Award.
