3.) Environmental awareness in CEE countries is still low

Romana Cermanova, born in Hradek nad Nisou, in the city where the three countries Czech Republic, Poland and Germany meet, is since 1996 a DBU representative for the Czech Republic, since 2005 further for the Slovak Republic, and from 2011 also for Hungary. In these countries, she identifies exemplary environmental projects, prepare and follow them during their realisation. In cooperation with the networks of former DBU scholarship holders, she coordinates since 2005 the DBU Scholarship Programme with CEE countries. Her comment on the DBU activities in these countries:

"The DBU support in Central and Eastern Europe is in my view particularly important because there is still a low environmental awareness among children, adolescents and adults, which can be raised through targeted environmental education and conservation projects as well as through the transfer of know-how in environmental technology and best practices from all areas of the DBU activities. The level of environmental awareness among the population in all countries, of course, characterizes the behaviour of people and can substantially affect the sustainable development of our modern industrial societies in Europe.”
