A school constructed completely of wood: it represents a new and attractive learning atmosphere for teachers and students, and offers architects a new field of activity. For the recent construction of the Schmuttertal Preparatory School (German: “gymnasium”) in the market village of Diedorf, Augsburg Region, favorable conditions for this approach were created and constructive model solutions were developed: as an incentive for ecological wood construction projects, but also as an answer to common prejudices against wood as a construction material. The sophisticated combination of pedagogic architecture, a “plus energy” concept, and wooden construction indicated the desirability, from the very beginning of the planning process, of creating an interdisciplinary team.
