2.) Innovation in electric motor construction - DBU Environmental Award recipients at upcoming Hannover Trade Fair

Bernhard and Johannes Oswald, the managing directors of OSWALD Elektromotoren GmbH of Miltenberg, were awarded the 2017 DBU German Environmental Prize last fall for the development of particularly efficient energy-saving electric industrial motors, which function without gears. The idea of using so-called “torque motors” in direct drive technology has revolutionized electric motor construction, especially for main drives. With the electric motors most commonly used in industrial plants, such as the asynchronous motor (ASM), the magnetic field is generated by induction. This requires a relatively high motor speed and limits the force density. By contrast, torque motors can be operated optimally at any machine speed. Their field is produced by powerful permanent magnets. These "custom-tailored" and highly efficient drives are not only powerful and flexible in application, but also especially environmentally-friendly. They reduce energy consumption by up to 50 % compared to other mechanical or hydraulic drive solutions. The machines are quieter and lighter, take up less space, and produce lower operating costs. In addition, the use of gear oil is no longer necessary.

Besides the use of the motors in industry, OSWALD motors are increasingly used in ship propulsion. This makes it possible for ships to travel purely electrically, emission-free, and almost noiselessly. With this engine technology, energy savings of up to 70 % can be achieved in ship propulsion compared to conventional diesel technology.

OSWALD will present one of these innovative electric motors especially for the shipping industry at the DBU’s Hannover Trade Fair stand this year.

When asked what has changed for their company as a result of the award, the DBU Environmental Prize recipients responded: "The award has had a very positive effect on our image. Currently we can see a slight increase in inquiries regarding our products. We are very pleased to have received this prestigious award last year."
