3.) Biodiversity - a safe bank?

Biodiversity is the basis of our livelihoods, and it is increasingly coming under threat. New global biodiversity targets of the United Nations (UN) are expected in spring 2022. Financing and financial flows play an important role in the negotiations. But what impact does the financial sector have on the biodiversity crisis? What can sustainable investments achieve, and what about subventions that are harmful to nature? Experts from science, finance and civil society discussed these and other questions in the #DBUdigital Online Salon "Biodiversity - a safe bank?" on December 7, 2021. The expert discussion took place in cooperation with the Network Forum on Biodiversity Research in Germany (NeFo). DBU Chief Financial Officer Michael Dittrich said in his welcoming speech that biodiversity is much less considered in sustainable capital investments than climate change. "One reason is that for climate change, better data is available for capital investors, for example on the carbon footprint of companies," Dittrich said.
