2.) Optimized Biofilter Systems for Aquaculture

Because of the strong over-fishing of the oceans and the ever-growing global demand for fish, shellfish and shellfish products the interest in aquaculture systems is growing continuously. Circulatory systems save resources and the environment. The mechanical-biological treatment of the recirculating water minimizes both the water consumption and the nutrient contamination of the environment. So far exist only a few microbiological studies on the biological nitrification in biofilters of marine aquaculture. The research consortium focused so far on:

  • Identification of the major nitrifiers,
  • Protection of their population in the laboratory,
  • Suitability of various fillers from different plastics as a culture medium for   nitrifiers

Moreover, the leaching of chemicals from the fillers and their inhibition for nitrifying bacteria has been analysed. In future experiments, the percentage composition of already tested plastics should be systematically varied to provide results on the attachment or inhibition. In addition the hydraulic management for an efficient nitrification in moving-bed biofilters can be optimized. The third phase of the joint project between the research laboratory LimnoMar (Hamburg) and others aims at the development of high-performance, practical products.
