4.) Restoration of Historic Tree-lined Roads

Preservation of historic tree-lined roads as a major component of the grown cultural landscape is a special part of efforts to preserve culture and nature. As it could be confirmed in previous projects of the DBU, just old tree-lined roads have a prominent role for species diversity: they are sometimes the only sites of old trees with a high amount of dead wood that can be found in the landscape and therefore an important habitat, such for bats, beetles and other small animals. In the joint project that combines nature conservation and historic preservation measures it was demonstrated exemplary, that these old trees can be maintained on most modern way and thus retain as part of a historic and designed landscape, but also as a habitat. The more than 600 examined trees, which are often over 200 years old, could be preserved almost all in this way. Only two trees had to be felled. The project and the findings have led to increased legal protection of historic tree-lined roads in the Land Schleswig-Holstein.
The results were published in a highly acclaimed guide, which can be obtained from the State Office for Agriculture, Rural Areas and the environment in Schleswig-Holstein.
