2.) Integrated production of Omega-3 EPA, using micro-algae in a photobioreactor
The project aims at developing an integrated process for the production of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-rich algae oil produced from phototrophic algae. The oil is characterized by a high proportion (over 30%) of essential omega-3 fatty acid EPA. This way, a cheap and pure vegetarian source of omega-3 is opened up, which can be used as a dietary supplement and in functional foods for a healthy human diet.
Environmental Improvements
- Photoautotrophic production of microalgae
- Integrated recycling and energy recovery of the whole biomass
- Avoidance of toxic pollution (PCBs, dioxins, heavy metals) of the product
- Reduction of organic solvents in the processing
- Micro-algae offer an alternative to fish oil for the production of EPA-containing oils - so the natural resource fish can be preserved.
